Rabbi's High Holiday Message
Thursday, 02 September 2010 12:53
Rabbi Shaya Kilimnick
There is no doubt that the High Holidays are different than all the holidays of the year. The holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are days of serious observance. They are Days of Judgment and Atonement demanding of us to search into our souls and our behavior and present ourselves before our Creator, pleading for His understanding and forgiveness. We are to identify with the image of Hashem having the ‘Books of Life & Death’ opened before Him and we are praying, pleading and begging to be inscribed and confirmed into the Book of Life. There is no other time during the year that is as spiritually trying as these days. After all, they are called the Days of Awe, the Yomim Noraim.

Many years ago Erich Segal wrote the famous novel, Love Story which was later to be made into a popular movie. One of the lines that caught everyone’s attention was, "Love means – never having to say, 'You’re sorry'." This became such a hackneyed expression that after a while it almost became an insult. I never understood what it meant.

The past Yom Tov of Pesach was very special. For the most part the weather cooperated with our needs and attendance at services was respectable. It was certainly a rewarding experience to see so many of children and grandchildren visiting for Pesach and to enjoy all the smiling faces.

Pesach - March/April 2010

Rabbi Shaya Kilimnick
Dear Friends,
We once again are privileged to celebrate and observe the holiday of Pesach. I am sure there are many who feel that the words privileged and celebrate somehow do not apply to this particular Yom Tov. After all there are so many challenging preparations, such as, house cleaning, koshering, expenses and Seder and Yom Tov meals arrangements. Where is the celebration!? Perhaps the word ‘exhaustion’ is a more accurate a word to be applied than ‘privilege’ when describing our observance of Pesach.
